Seven Selection-Day stats that separated CWS champions from the field (with one famous exception)

Fifteen of the last sixteen national champions cleared the same seven thresholds by Selection Day.

By Jesse McConnell, May 27, 2026. 3 min read.

Fifteen of the last sixteen College World Series champions cleared the same seven thresholds on Selection Day. The exception is 2022 Ole Miss, an at-large bubble team that ran the table in the tournament.

The seven thresholds, each set at the weakest qualifying champion's value:

  • RPI rank of 15 or better (floor: 2013 UCLA).
  • Wins Above Bubble of 7.85 or higher (floor: 2015 Virginia).
  • Team WHIP of 1.32 or lower (floor: 2015 Virginia).
  • Road win rate of .583 or higher, neutral sites included (floor: 2011 South Carolina).
  • Last-15 win rate of .533 or higher (floor: 2023 LSU, 8 of 15).
  • Blowout ratio of 1.57 or higher, wins by five or more runs over losses by five or more (floor: 2015 Virginia).
  • February win rate of .667 or higher (floor: 2010 South Carolina, 2 of 3).

Applied to the 64-team 2026 field, the thresholds left four teams: UCLA, Auburn, Florida and Mississippi State. Nine more missed by one stat.

This describes past champions. It is not a forecast: when thresholds are set using only earlier champions, the filter admits the next champion about 64% of the time. Sixteen seasons is a small sample, and 2022 Ole Miss shows a team can win without matching the profile.

The champion table is below, followed by the four teams that passed.

The full write-up, with the 2026 field-narrowing funnel, every team's seven stats, the nine near misses and the limits, is at Seven Selection-Day stats that separated CWS champions. The model's odds for the 2026 field are on the College World Series page.

  • Team EPA per play is free on The Margin now. Here's what it says about who wins Super Bowls.

Jesse McConnell, Oct 6, 2026. NFL, 5 min read

Offense and defense EPA per play for all 32 teams, free, on the team ratings page and every team file. Since 2015, 8 of 11 champions were above average on both sides of the ball, and none was below average on both.

  • The Margin QB Grade: one number for every quarterback play

Jesse McConnell, Oct 5, 2026. NFL, 10 min read

The Margin QB Grade is the points a quarterback adds per play, 50 is average. Against eleven other ratings on 2016 to 2025, it tracked a game's scoring best (0.818, vs 0.712 for QBR and 0.688 for QBERT), tied with a four-stat blend. On stability and prediction, QBR, QBERT and others match or edge it. Hand-charted throw data didn't help.

  • Team comps: what 12 lookalike teams can and can't tell you

Jesse McConnell, Sep 30, 2026. NFL, 6 min read

A new page: for any NFL team at any point in its season, the 12 most similar teams since 1999 and how they finished. We tested it before launch, and it predicts worse than a simple formula. What comps are good for (range, style, context) and what they aren't (forecasts, bets, playoff odds).
